Exercise One of the Most Important Weapons for Lowering Cholesterol

Apr 04, 2012

Exercise is one of the most important weapons for lowering cholesterol, in many more ways than just raising good cholesterol and lowering triglycerides.   At the minimum, one should take a brisk walk every day, whether it is on a break from desk work or deliberately at an exercise time.  But there are many other benefits, particularly for resistance type exercise and group sports.

Exercise also reduces stress which helps reduce cortisol levels and consequently inflammation.  It adds lean muscle to the body, which boosts metabolism and has been associated with improved brain function, improved blood pressure, and improved sugar metabolism.  Exercise makes us look younger, improves circulation, and improves mood.

Often overlooked are the benefits of resistance exercise, which includes body weight exercise as well as working with resistance bands and weights.   Doing these will improve cardiovascular health as well during the short bursts of physical exertion which get the heart pumping, but will also reshape and strengthen the body.  It somehow gives us more emotional and mental fortitude.  It is also like the fountain of youth, taking years of your appearance.

Group sports promotes contact with other people, fun, and tension release, which are all good for lowering blood pressure, tension, and depression.

And last, exercise helps keep the excess fat at bay.  Obesity is directly related to poor blood values of cholesterol, triglycerides, high blood pressure, cancer risk, heart attack risk and stroke risk.

Exercising is one of the most important weapons against fighting high cholesterol levels. Regular physical activity has two cholesterol-related effects. It raises the level of HDL cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) and also lowers the level of triglycerides, a substance linked to high cholesterol in the body....More at Fighting Cholesterol the Active Way

So, as you can see, exercise is one of the most important weapons for lowering cholesterol, and not just because of the direct effect it has on good cholesterol and triglycerides.  It provides a whole host of benefits, many more than just named here.
